Nevada: Caucus February 2020
The 2020 Nevada Democratic presidential caucuses took place on February 22, 2020. Nevada has a closed caucus, which means only registered Democrats could participate. Nevada allows for same day voter registration at the polls.
For the first time this year, an early voting period was added from February 14-18. Voters filled out a paper form, where they ranked the candidates in order of preference. The results of these ballots were added in to the count during the physical caucus, if at least three names were selected.
As in Iowa, there were two rounds of caucusing to select the ultimate winner for that precinct. For a candidate to be a viable choice, she or he needed to receive at least 15% of the vote. In between the two rounds, caucus goers could advocate for those whose candidate did not meet the threshold to join their candidate's caucus, or simply switch alignment.
While overall voter turnout was close to record breaking, in-person caucusing was lower due to the early vote. At one precinct in the vote center where I photographed, only one person showed up. Nevertheless, their vote was added to the total from the early vote and the caucus rankings took place.
